Season

Club championships

Championships are held near the end of the season and give swimmers the chance to race for medals in their age group and celebrate their progress.

  • Championship races are held in March
  • They may run over one or two Friday nights
  • The number of nights is decided by the Club Committee, based on nominations

Who can compete

To be eligible to swim in Championship events, swimmers must:

  • Be a financial member of the club, and
  • Have attended at least 60% of all available Friday night club fixtures during the season

Swimmers must only compete in the distance they have qualified for under the club's progression rules. Swimmers who have qualified and nominated for a 100m event may also swim the 50m event of the same stroke.

Any swimmer who competes in a distance they have not qualified for will have that result removed. A committee representative will endeavour to let the parent or carer know as soon as possible if a qualifying time hasn't been met.

Age groups

A swimmer's age group is the age they turn during the calendar year in which the Championships are held. Events are conducted separately for boys and girls in these age groups:

  • 6 years and under, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 years
  • 13–14 years
  • 15–17 years
  • Open — 18 years and over

Races may be made up of mixed ages or genders depending on swimmer numbers. Places and medals are still awarded within each age group for boys and girls, based on finishing times.

Events & distances

  • All four strokes — freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly
  • 25m and 50m distances, based on qualification
  • 100m Freestyle and 100m Individual Medley

Swimmers may only enter events they are qualified and eligible for.

Medals & results

  • Gold, silver and bronze medals go to swimmers placing first, second and third in each event and age group
  • Championship races are judged by appointed officials, and their decisions are final
  • Placings are determined by finish order within the swimmer's age group

Nominations

Nominations are made through the Swim Club Connect app and usually open about two weeks before the Championships.

Championships are a celebration of the season and an opportunity for swimmers to challenge themselves. Families are encouraged to cheer for all swimmers, not just their own.

Season

Trophies & awards

Trophies and awards are presented at the end of the season to recognise commitment, effort, improvement and attendance across Friday night club fixtures. Awards are based on the points system, so the focus is participation and personal progress rather than finishing position or speed.

Most awards need 60% attendance, meaning a swimmer raced at least 60% of the Friday club nights held that season.

Points trophies

Awarded to the swimmers with the highest Season Points total in each age division who meet the 60% attendance rule. Season Points count 12.5m, 25m and 50m races. First, second and third place trophies are awarded in each division.

Overall Club Champion trophies

These recognise consistent effort across the whole season, and go to the swimmers with the highest Season Points total who meet the 60% attendance rule:

  • Junior Boy and Junior Girl — 10 years and under
  • Senior Boy and Senior Girl — 11 years and over

Distance Champion trophies

Awarded to the swimmers with the highest Distance Points total across the 100m events who meet the 60% attendance rule. Distance Points are scored the same way as Season Points, and kept as a separate tally.

100% attendance award

Awarded to swimmers who attend every Friday night club fixture during the season.

Special consideration may be given for illness, injury, attendance at another swim carnival, or compulsory school swimming commitments. Requests must be submitted in writing to evertonparksharks@gmail.com before the final club night.

Season and Participation awards

  • Season Award for swimmers who attended 60% or more of the club nights
  • Participation Award for every other swimmer who raced with us during the season

All trophies and awards are intended to encourage regular attendance, reward effort and improvement, and celebrate participation and club spirit. Every swimmer's journey and achievement is different, and we ask families to support and celebrate all of them.
